‘The glory of God can be described as the weight of the majestic goodness of who God and the resulting name, or reputation that he gains from revealing himself’ (Hamilton J.R Jr).
Glory is often used in the bible to describe the beauty, splendour and majesty of God, it refers to the adoration of the very nature of God “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shewet his handiwork” Psalm 19:1 KJV.
The actual glory of God is in the recognition of His nature as the creator of the whole universe, redeemer, provider and sustainer and everything that God is to us.
We do not add to His glory when we give glory to God, we are merely recognising, acknowledging and reverencing Him. Isaiah 6:3 tells us that “…the whole earth is full of his glory”, the glory of God is seen in all his creations from the tall trees to the mighty ocean to animals and us humans. Have you ever been on a flight and just look through the window, or watch some documentary about sea life and just marvel at the awesomeness of God!
Why is Glory so important
The scriptures tells us that Jesus Christ sought the glory of the father in all that he did, Jesus told the Jews in John 7:18 that “He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him”.
We are also encouraged in Mattews 5:16 to seek God’s glory through our good works “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven”.
Apostle Paul urge us in 1 Cor 31 to do all things to the glory of God “whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God”.
Glory to His Name
Why should we give glory to the name of God?
Because God has created us for his glory “Even everyone that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him.” Isaiah 43:7 KJV.
Throughout the scriptures, we can see that God honours his own holy name so much because there is none greater and would often do things for the sake of his holy name;
“For the LORD will not forsake his people for his great name’s sake” Sam 12:22.
God restored Israel from exile for the glory of his name, He had pity for his holy name and said to them “I do not do this for your sakes, O house of Isreal, but for mine holy names sake…” and wanted to “sanctify my great name, which was profaned among the heathen”.
Psalm 148:13 tells us “Let them praise the name of the LORD: for his name alone is excellent; his glory is above the earth and heaven”.
We are also instructed in 1Chr 16;10 that “Glory ye in his holy name..”
Revelation of his Name
God reveals Himself through his names, and when we call God by his names it shows the level of relationship that we have with Him. Also, through a better understanding of the names of God, we can call the name of the Lord relevant to our current situation.
Some of the Hebrew names of God according the scriptures are listed:
YAHWEH/ JEHOVAH (Lord God) – The Self existent one, God told Moses in Exo 6:3 that he is JEHOVAH. God revealed himself to Moses in Exodus 3:14 and declares that he is “I AM THAT I AM” showing his self existent nature
